Sooner or later you are going to fall while in line skating so learning to fall in a controlled way will save you a lot of pain and embarrassment! We’ve put together some information to help you become an expert at ‘controlled falling’

First and most importantly - Always wear good protective gear. Do not go for the cheapest gear as it will not last long, will not protect you adequately and will soon need replacing. Wear a good skating helmet, not a bicycle helmet which is only designed for one impact. Wear padded knee pads, wrist guards and elbow pads to protect these vulnerable parts.
When you start to fall do not fight it - as you lose your balance don’t look down or flail your arms around. This will upset your balance even more. If you can keep your centre of gravity low you may be able to recover from the fall. If you bend your knees and squat down and try to place most of your body forward over your skates you may recover your balance.
If you continue to fall try not to land on your exposed tail bone but on the better padded areas of your butt. Try to gently roll as you fall which can lessen the impact by spreading out the body area in contact with the ground. To do this roll as you fall with your arms close to your body and let the impact be absorbed by your protective gear. Protect your head and face as much as possible.
Try to stay relaxed as you fall and not tense up muscles which will lead to injury. You will get better at this after you fall a few times and realise that you can fall in a safe, controlled way. After you fall, especially if there are other skaters in the area, sit up with legs hands and arms close to your body. Do not lay flat out or have arms exposed on the ground as you will risk being run over by other skaters and causing them to fall too.
Practice falling on a soft surface until you are comfortable with falling in a safe, controlled way.
