If you are buying second hand skates to use for derby the best option is to buy some from a derby girl. Although you will most likely pay more than at a second hand or thrift shop the skates will definitely be usable for derby. Skates bought at a thrift store or on eBay will nearly always need wheels and bearings upgraded before they can be used.

A large part of the fun in derby is from the skill and agility needed at high speeds on a small track and wheels suitable for this are not cheap. A new set of suitable wheels will be upwards from $45 and $15 for suitable bearings. So if you purchase a used pair of skates that need upgrading it will cost you at $60 more.

Always inspect second hand skates offered for sale carefully. Replace any worn or rusty parts before you use them and make sure all nuts are tight and the wheels, stoppers and trucks are adjusted to suit you.

What to look for when buying used derby skates

  • Comfortable, well fitting skates
  • Brand names - some good ones are Atlas, Riedell, Sure-Grip, Answer
  • Cheap entry level with padded short boots - Boxer, Torq, R3 Rock - although cheap they will need to be upgraded

What NOT to buy

Artistic high end skates - tall rigid boots are the worst thing to wear for derby. Artistic skates are made to be very responsive and flexible and lead to lack of stability for derby
