Safety
Before you begin to skate please be aware of the safety guidelines below.
- Be aware of objects and other skaters around you.
- Always wear safety clothing when skating outside including helmets, kneepads, wrist guards and elbow pads.
- Check your skates regularly and replace any worn parts.
- Avoid skating at night. If you must, wear reflective clothing and attach flashing bicycle lights to your helmet and waist.
- Avoid skating on wet surfaces.
- Do not wear headphones while skating. You will not be able to hear traffic or other skaters.
Absolute beginner’s guide to roller skating
- Put toes together and heels apart on a v position.
- Stand with body upright and do not look down.
- Using small steps march forward lifting your knees but keeping feet in a v position.
- Do not slide the skates as they will roll themselves as long as your feet are placed correctly.
- To increase speed push your skates out to the side.
- To skate backwards place your feet in an inverted v position. i.e. heels apart and toes together.
- You can fall safely by keeping your hands out in front, bending your knees and sitting back on to the ground.
